Ann Marie Nowak, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Atmore, Alabama was recently fired from her job. According to Nowak’s attorney, she was terminated for following up on a client’s referral to an attorney. Nowak has filed a complaint against the Human Resource Department of the Atmore City-County Government claiming her termination was a direct result of her referrals.

According to Nowak’s attorney, in order to be considered a “licensed therapist”, a licensed therapist must be registered with the American Professional Therapist Association (APTA) and have a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She also had to successfully complete an internship in marriage and family therapy in order to become eligible to practice as a marriage and family therapist in Alabama. After completing her internship, Nowak had been working for several years in Birmingham, Alabama but was not happy there. Nowak is not satisfied with the income that she receives at her current job. According to Nowak’s attorney, the reason Nowak’s compensation was terminated was because she referred her clients to an attorney for their financial needs.

Nowak was able to obtain a position at the Center For the Family in Birmingham, AL. However, her salary did not satisfy her anymore. So now, she decided to become a marriage and family therapist and work with individuals in the community. This is what made Nowak so qualified for a position at the Center for the Family. If her complaint is proven true, it will mean the Center for the Family did not abide by the standards that they set forth when they began hiring professionals to work in their institution. Nowak is looking forward to making a strong stand against her former employer. Her goal is to make sure that her case does not affect her ability to find work in the future.
